I found this one as a tiny hitch hiker and believe it's some kind of dendro.

A pink/white dendro too stubborn to open

Duncanopsammia axifuga

Eventually I'll add Balanophyllia ponderosa
and Rhizotrochus typus
to my list.

LOL
Just keep an eye out and sometimes you can get them at a great price. I bought my colony of the coccinea with 7 polyps large polyps + 1 small polyp for about $120. Then I sold 1 polyp so really I only payed 60 bucks for 7 polyps total.
The growth should be similar to that of branching frogspawns or hammers if they're fed often. I feed all my dendros once per day.

Great pics! I love my dendro. It has grown from 3 polyps to 9 in little over a year. How does the ballanophyllia sp. compare in looks and size to the dendrophyllia coccinea?

Very nice. I love my dendro also. I haven't had any new polyps but the smaller polyps have grown bigger. Man can these things eat!

Thanks for the comments. The balano pretty much looks just like a sun coral and is the same size, except it's open almost 24/7. The piece in the picture is almost 1.5" across. When I bought the balano I asked for two polyps for 20 bucks/polyp, but instead I recieved 10.

What do you guys feed your dendros and how often?

I feed mine mostly mysis every other day. When I take the canopy off for maintenance (once a week), I will drop in a lot of pellets. I plan to buy more meaty foods like krill and use it just for them. I have also seen it grab a few flakes when I am feeding the fish but I don't spot feed them flakes. Now I need to focus n my acan lords. They look healthy but aren't spreading due ti lack of spot feeding. That will change

hmm... they do look a lot like sun corals. i have seen dendros and oculd identify them in person, but maybe i have been mistaken blanos for suncorals? so is the main difference in seeing them that they are open during the day? and it appears that they are more of a polyp while a sun coral has more orange flesh aroudn the polyp

The polyps on sun corals are much more spaced appart from each other and protrude outwards. The polyps of this balano are snug side-by-side and are completely flat against the rock when closed. I guess it's possible that you may have seen a balano and thought it was a sun coral, but I think that would be highly unlikely because balanos are very rare.
My goal is to eventually (sooner rather than later) get a B. ponderosa which is similar in shape and color to the D. coccinea but can grow twice as big. I only know of one guy that was selling a couple, but he's out for now.

Well let me know when he gets more..LOL. I feed my dendros chopped squid and they get HUGE! They also get whatever's on the menu for the day which includes all of this on alternating days.
Fresh~ clam, shrimp, mussell, sguid,grouper
Frozen~Piscine mysis every day
ON's formula VHP,Prime reef,Invert Formula
Cyclop-eeze, Golden Pearls,Rotifers,Clams, DT's Oyster eggs
Dry~ Coral Vibrance, ORA-Glo
Liquid~Chromamax,Selcon,Zoe
Jar~ Sweetwater Zooplankton
Ther's lots more stuff in my freezer, but that's all I can think of at the moment. Diversity is always great for healthy corals and fish.

Will do, but don't expect the ponderosas to be cheap. I'm not sure on the price that he was selling them outright for, but his last polyp was put up for auction and sold for over $500!

hello, im bringing this thread back because i have a question for viper
so yesterday i was at one of my LFS and i saw what looked to be a black version of a balano... but then again, who the heck knows? not me, that's for sure. but never having heard of a black species, i asked what it was and was told by someone (although even he admitted to me that he doesnt know a lot about corals because all he keeps are some softies) that he thinks it was a suncoral that was jsut recessing. which is why i didnt buy it, i was wondering if it was jsut a dieing sun coral. but the polyps were pea sized, and i dont think ive seen a suncoral with full grown pea sized polyps, not even the black ones?
was this a balano or dendro or something else? or was it jsut a dieing black suncoral?
it had no tissue surrounding the skeleton, jsut the polyps.
PS: it was also out during the day?
