desktop nano tank - lighting?

should i get a timer for a desktop nano i'm considering putting up in my room?
i just think it would b easier to have there day/night cycles on a continual timer so as to not get any abnormal light exposure.... maybe just me.. anyway
how long should i leave the lights on/off? any thoughts? thanks!

i get algea blooms when mines on longer than 8 hours a day

im thinking about getting a nano cube thats either 10 or 12 gallons, i forget which, but either way the lighting is included inthe fixture, if i had a link offhand i'd b able to tell u what the specific details of it are, but i can't atm
