Detailed DIY Sump/Refugium and possible tutorial!

I've read every single post in regards to sumps and refugiums. I really didn't get the jist of what they are all about. I'm currently having a problem with air bubbles in my tank. I've tried several ways to eliminate them with no luck.
This has lead me into consideration of building a sump and moving all of my HOB hardware to the sump/refugium.
What are the pros and cons to having a sump/refugium?
My thoughts are this: Moving my RedSea Deluxe Protein Skimmer, Emperor 400 Wet/Dry, and 500W Heater into a sump where it will handle all the filtration. Adding a HOB overflow and using a return pump into the tank with a T with several holes to disperse water flow in different directions. Very similar to the Clarity Plus 75g FBH and it's built in overflow. And last but not least, eliminating my AquaClear 802 powerheads, possibly using them in conjunction with the sump/fuge.
After reading, and agreeing, it appears the larger sump/fuge the better for improved water stablization.
I have a good idea of how the sumps and fuges work but after reading all the posts, it's still a bit hazy. If there's someone out there with good experience with building these and workings of these, I would REALLY appreciate it if you could help me out. In return, after this project is completed, I would like to put together a tutorial that would clear up most questions that may be asked about the construction, operation, and maintenance of this type of setup.
I'm very handy and improvise very well so if one or more of you would like to contribute, I would really appreciate it and after, i'm sure many others will be thankful with a new indepth explanation/tutorial of how these work, how to construct one, and why they may or may not be a good idea.
Thanks ahead of time,
Jrittz

I too am in the same predicament. I would do a Sump/Refugium..... and yeah I have researched this site, extensively.... and sometimes things seem a bit hazy and everyone does them differently.
It's one of the reasons why I haven't made any purchases yet, I want to have a good SWA, and not on that will constantly have problem after problem......

The reason you may be finding so much "conflicting" information on sumps/refugiums is that there is no "one way" to build one or set one up..
The real question is "What do you want your sump to do for you...?"
In it's simplest form a sump is simpley an "extra" tank to which water flows from the tank and is then returned...
The least it will do is add water volume and circulation...
After that it's up to you to decide what you want from it...
You can "hide" misc. equipment in it...Like your skimmer and heaters
You can use it for filtration with a wet/dry or bioball tower or hang a HOB power filter on it...
You may want to go with a more "natural" approach and use it for live rock or go all out and add an additional tank...(refugium) where you could add a deep sand bed Macros more rock alternate lighting or run 24/7...
You can fill your refugium by "T"ing off the overflow line directly from the tank or "T" off the return line from the pump in the sump...
So...What do you want from your sump setup and what do you need to know to get there ?
