detritus eaters

Are nassarius snails the best detritus eaters? What else does a good job? How many of the snails should I buy for my 55 gallon reef that has about 75 pounds of rock and a 3 inch sand bed?

Some people will tell you 1 snail per gallon. I disagree. I have a 120 that is doing great with 6 or 7 super nassarius, a few trochus, a few cerith, ummm, i think thats it for the big tank. All together about 15-20 snails. The Super nassarius are great at finding uneaten food bits and stirring the sand bed. I think a lot of snails will eat detritus, but not if they have other options. The prefer to eat other things.

What about that group of 200 copepods that this website sells? Has anyone bought those and had luck with them (before pod eating fish decided it was nice meal?)

I bought a few bottles from the "bay" and a some off here when they had them.
I have since never had to buy anything else. They breed like crazy.
I bought them for my one tank since I have a scooter and a mandarin and I was noticing a depletion of co pods at night.
Well lo and behold they both started eating marine S instead. They will eat co-pods but stop when marine S hit’s the water.

What is marine S and where does one get it? Wonder if the rest of us could get some and teach a mandarin to eat it? Lesley

My colt coral loves to be spot fed a splash of Marine Snow. It extends upward for it.

By far the best addition to my tank was a cucumber (non-toxic type) I added one to my 125 softie tank and within a month he had scoured every inch of the sand bed and cleaned up every pile of detritus you could see. Now he has a system where he moves from the left side to the right side and then back to the left side of the tank. You can actually see where he's been. Grown like crazy, went from about 2"L to 6" I watched him one day work on the underside of a cave that had built up, the sand was almost grey from buildup, he just camped out for a few days and sure enough it was pure white when he was done. Pretty cool little creature, he has these tentacles that he pulls globs of brown sand into his mouth and poops them out white the other end. You can actually see the area that he's been working on as it's white and the other area is brown.
