Devils hand with attached Monti

Hey guys. I recently puchaced devils hand that also had a red mont (polys are green) attached to it. Im hoping that my lights will be able to support it. I have the 48" coralife combo with the double 65watt 10000ks with double true 03 65 watt atintics. I also feed coral chilli. I target feed them. The back of the bottle says to feed 3xs a week? what do you all recommed? The rescerch i have done on montis says the are ok with the type of lighting i have as long as they are 10 inches from the surface?
Not sure if this is accurate? They look great. polys are extended at night and are always super bright. (i also have it placed about 5 inches from the top of my tank. My water params are excellent, my nitrates are at 5. Im a stickler about water changes and do 10 percent every week. I should also mention that my husband is in the middle of doing a major project. Building a LED lighting system similar to the pro systems, but he is testing it on a smaller tank first to make sure that it will be comparable to the pro systems before systems before we put them on our DT. (so we wont have this lighting forever.) Thanks guys.

the monti will most likley survive with that type of lighting. though your growth wont be as fast as it can gropw and the coloration may not be 100%. it'll survive.
My concern would be having it attached to a leather that exudes terpenoid compounds which are known to be detrimental to the health of SPS. I would seperate the two corals for the sake of the monti.

This is what I had written:
A picture would help honestly for the monti cap question. Monti Caps usually don't demand as high of lighting as other SPS, this is true, BUT, there's some issues with this. Devil's hand is a leather, SPS do not like leathers as a general rule. Leathers release a toxin that attacks SPS to explain it simply. The other issue is that leathers grow VERY FAST. If the monti cap is under the leather, then as the leather grows, the monti cap will end up shaded and therefore won't thrive. The plus side is, monti caps are brilliantly resilient. You can snap it off where it is and glue it to a different area in the tank where it won't be shaded.
Water changes should be enough food for them (at least that is what most people say). What they really need is consistent water parameters. I do feed my SPS. I'm using Coral Frenzy right now. I also add Amino Acids (I use Coral Amino by Brightwell Aquatics) once or twice a week and Koral Color and Reef Snow also made by Brightwell. I also have to add a two part Ca and dKH buffer made by Brightwell, but I have a lot of SPS. If the monti cap is the only SPS in your tank, water changes are more than enough and then if you really want to feed, I'd only feed a tiny bit once or twice a week. When you feed, turn off the pumps and skimmer, it will help the coral absorb more.
Good luck with the LED system. We're thinking about doing this soon, trying to see how it goes for others first.
I would keep the monti cap near the lights since they are only PC's but it should be fine.
Hope this helps. :)

Thanks Guys! B- I didnt get your messege..my unread messages says 0..ill check it when im done hear. Thanks for the info. I My LFS guy saw it off infront of me before i bought it so they would have a better chance..I was concerned about lighting..TOTALLY forgot about the toxins. How far away should they be from each other. I need to get a pic of them up...now im thinking thats not the correct ID because they look like pretty mature corals. and they have obviously grown together until this point. He did say he wasnt sure what they were but If he had to guess hes say some sort of monti...weird. He Ill take pics this weekend sometime. Thanks so much for the advice guys. guys are like

A pic would help. Usually monti's don't get too bothered by the toxin, but there's still a risk.
The message should be right on your profile under visitor messages, not in your inbox. I have too many messages to reply to sometimes and waiting 4 minutes is just ridiculous.

Once you tell me for sure what it is I plan to move them..I have "Glue down anxiety" I like to rearrange things..or have the option of taking things back to the LFS if they dont do well. If you glue something down and have to take it off do you just chisel it off your rock? Thanks for the advise..heres pics...

You can see that he cut the most of it off of the devils hand..but some of it is still on their. If it is a monti and it does send tonxins out and kills the coral that is attached to the devils hand and kills it..will this endanger the health of the devils hand? thanks for all your help. PS>.i know i have bubble algea and a couple aptasia...we are dealing with it. Thanks for noticing if you do.
Agian thank you all so much for your help!

I dont think that worked....nothing seems to be going right for me lately i swear....
....now itll have to wait till tonite as I have to get ready for a long work day/night. Unless I can talk my sweet husband Into posting them. He happens to be a computer genius...where is he when i need him?
Thanks for being patient guys. Im going to move my leather now just to be safe...

It looks to me as if you have Thin Finger Leather Coral (Sinularia sp.) and a Montipora. (I was able to get into your Photobucket account to view the pics). From what I know, Thin Finger Leather looks similar to Devil's Hand except that the Devil's Hand does not have as many polyps. Your picture looks like it is covered in polyps.
Anyways, if you glue a monti cap somewhere and aren't happy with it's location, you can literally just snap them and glue them somewhere else. My husband moves things all the time. It's not the best for the coral, but monti's can survive just about anything.
If you're really nervous about the toxin that leathers can produce, you can run carbon (I prefer Chemi Pure Elite) in your filtration and then you'll be fine.

Nova..I LOVE YOU THANK YOU!! My Husband just taught me how to do it so In going to try it Now.

BTLDReef..Do you think that these guys are OK this close together? I am going to glue down the Monti now that you guys think it will do ok with the lights I have. (I have the Purple epoxy stuff but plan to use just a small amount.) To be honest with you It looks pretty healthy to me so far. I Already Run Plain Chemi Pure and love the stuff so much I swear Id eat it if I could. Thanks agian guys so much for being so patient with me...and as always your wealth of Knowledge is priceless!
I also am going to organize my pics soon and finally start a tank thread..even though i inherited It Four months ago...Its about time.

To be honest with you the main the main reason I bought this coral was because id never seen two corals growing together like this and thought it was uniuqe. (then he hacked it off.) Ive been reading alot on Garf about how they have been growing certian corals mounted unsidedown. have any of you heard about this? also at the LFS I never saw all the polpys out on this guy and when they are closed (which is hardly ever now) he (finger) is a beautiful turqouise color. Then i brought him home and as soon as I put him in my tank holy poly explosion. To be honest I really kinda wanna glue the monti back on the the leather, but mount the Finger sideways or upside down. Maybe I will grow the monti first or wait till I get better lighting or wait till i get your feedback...Or wait to see how the small peice that is still attacked to the finger does...is it possible that that will grow to a fill size monti? Im sure it will take ages..

I think they'll be fine, especially if you're running Chemi Pure. If you're tank was loaded with leathers, then you would have a little bit more of an issue. But if you're good about changing the carbon on a regular basis, you're fine.
It is definitely time to do a tank thread!

I happen to have a GARF that was raised upside down. It fully encrusted. I now have it right side up, but it formed a really cool shape due to the upside down growth.
The finger leather will twist and grow back towards the light, it might form a pretty cool design as well. They're pretty hardy corals, so if you want to try it, I'd say go for it. If you notice it not being as healthy, flip it back over.
I would not glue the monti back to the leather. The leather will end up shading it eventually and the monti won't thrive. Give your tank time, you'll have corals growing side by side in no time, especially if you add polyps and zoanthids.
