Diadema basslet is digging a huge hole in the middle of my tank, any idea why?

I have diadema basslet in my 60G tank (its been in there for several years). 2 or 3 days ago (s)he started digging a giant hole in my sand in the front of the tank. Its sprinkling the sand all over the rocks, its very interesting to watch but I have no idea why.. Any theories?
maybe it got bored, my piccaso trigger does radome stuff like that all the time. he loves barying my smaller pieces of live rock and then nibbling at me for food when i dig them up. he also digges all the way to the glass bottom of my aquarium.
