Diary of a Rescue Tank! 46 gal

So after a couple of months with a 34 gal reef tank downstairs, we started looking for a tank for the bedroom. Having dropped about a jillion dollars already on the first tank--and with no relief in sight I might add-- we decided to check Craig's List for some ideas for tank #2 (well, #3 if you count the freshies). Sure enough, there was what seemed to be a great deal: a 46-gal bow front marine tank with 150 lbs of LR, a pair of clowns, a couple of other fish, a Remora pro skimmer, 2 powerheads, a stand, all the supplies and a 10K MH lighting system, minus one bulb. The whole thing was up for $375 so I couldn't pass it up!
Enter reality: the tank is in pretty good physical shape although the front-back brace is melted away from the MH lights. For safety, that will be one of the first structural issues to face but not a huge deal. However, I think when the guy decided to get out of the hobby he pretty much gave up on the tank. He gave us the flakes he's been feeding and a whole box of test equipment that looks years old, told me as we were leaving that he does water changes about once every six weeks (so probably less, realistically), and couldn't really ID the fish in his tank (one might be a damsel, ugh). His other fish died (surprise surprise!) and although there's about 75 lbs of LR (close enough to 150 I guess) there's no mechanical filtration other than the skimmer and no CUC.
I am always up for a challenge, and I am determined to VERY SLOWLY nurse this tank back to health. I am really hopeful that the fish will make it through, otherwise I'd move faster. Because it's what they're used to and a QT would definitely kill them, they're all back in the tank with the water they've been living in. It just about killed ME to put them in there, but there weren't really any safe options tonight so back in they went.
I tested the water just as it came out of their tank:

pH 8.65 (Hanna meter)
Spec. grav. 1.020 (refractometer)
NO2 0.2 (Hagen)
NO3 ~100 (Salifert)
KH off the charts; not sure if guesstimating means anything that high but maybe 22? The chart stops at 16 (Salifert)
Ca ~620 (again, off the charts, had to go to 1/2 strength testing with lower accuracy)
PO4 3... yes, 3! Not 0.3, just 3! I have never seen that color! (Salifert)

I definitely have my work cut out for me. This will be an interesting process and I will be following my fish guru around like a hungry puppy while I try to get this back in shape. Our first order of business after structural safety is going to be adding a power filter (HOB for now) and a CUC. Eventually I'll add a sump but one thing at a time.
Wish me luck!!!
PS--can anyone tell me what that greenish ball in shots 2 and 3 is??????? If it really is a green ball sponge (closest thing I could find online) I'm sure I killed it; he never mentioned it was in there and I pulled it right out into the air, sigh.

So it's the next morning, and as you can see the water has cleared up quite a bit (although it's still green!) I have lots of room for more H2O so I'm adding Catalina water slowly to work on getting the SG up from 1.020. I added 1/2 gallon this a.m., fed some quality food and will leave them alone for a while. I'm holding off on the lights today since they need some good cleaning (lots of salt and dust) and I want to get the power filter and skimmer up and running as well.
I'll need help ID'ing my fish; I have a little guy who's about 1 1/2 inches long and probably a chromis; he has the right green/blue coloration but is smaller than others I've seen. The tougher one is the big black fancy talied fish. Narrow body width but twice as long as he is high; could be a damsel but not sure. His shape resembles a blue damsel but he's only been black in the last 12 hours. He's about 2 to 2-1/2 inches long with long fins coming straight off the back and a long y-shaped tail. I've tried to get pics but he's fast and hides under the rockwork often--I'll keep trying!

YES, that 'was' a sponge....and YES, once it hit the air it will die....BUT they come on their own, so there probably will be more

GOOD LUCK with that tank....LOL...I'll be very interested to watch this tank transformed

A great start to a great Rescue Diary! I look forward to witnessing your progress.
I'm also curious on the best method of repairing the center brace.

The center brace won't be all that pretty; we'll likely just add 90 degree corner brackets to a cross piece and tension in place. I'll post a pic when it's done just for yuks.

So tonight I'm feeding the fish and I noticed my bristle worms are getting really big--yuck. No, wait, that's not a bristle worm, I think it's a brittle star! I don't know where he's been hiding; his legs are as big as earthworms. I'm pretty sure there's another one in another piece of LR but when I shined an LED on them (itty-bitty-book light) they both pulled in almost completely.
Cool!

Most brittle stars will stay hidden and come out at night....I had a serpent that I had not seen in months once...lol

Wow, so we finally installed the lights but they're old and they don't work. So, next step is to order some more MH lamps and maybe fluorescents (although I'm afraid that might not be the T5 issue). I think I'll get 20,000 lights; I understand they lead to better color but slower growth. Clearly I am not in a hurry judging by how long it took to get the big lights installed!
PS-Hanging lights over a tank that's situated at a weird angle in the corner of a room will really test a marriage but we survived.

Pics would help to id the fish, but I understand how difficult that can be. Kinda sounds to me like some sort of Fire fish. Scissortail, maybe?

Finally decided it was something in the damsel family. Alas, it went missing and we couldn't find it anywhere. Looked above, behind, below, pulled apart rocks, etc. About a month later found him mummified in the crease of a comforter that was stored near the tank. Not sure if he jumped (as I suspect) or if the cat was exceptionally lucky. Either way, his identification is now water under the bridge so to speak and we still have only the two clowns and a chromis in that tank. I never thought I'd go for a FOWLR tank but I actually kind of like it, and am considering keeping it that way and adding more fish although with those lights I'll bet corals would look great!
