besides, they can be a prob for your nitrates down the road, and alos rob the system of things you want to keep in there.

Yes, but there are easier ways to get there.

Could you explain more? I have one too and would like to know what you mean.

skimming better, waterchanging better, watercirculating better, ozone, uv sterilizing (if not running ozone), many different things, but IMO not necessary to have a diatom filter.

So with that in mind, Mag. 350 ok then along with Emperor 280 bio-wheel filter?

You could get a skimmer for less than a Magnum. Even just a little air driven skimmer will work for a 20 gallon and you would be amazed at how good those airdriven skimmers work. A skimmer is the best way to go.

I actually got my Mag. 350 for $35.00. Couldn't pass it up.

That is a great price. I would still use a small airdriven skimmer 24/7. A coralife super skimmer is only $15.00. It is by no means the best skimmer but it will work. I assume that for $35.00 it was not new right.

It was new but it was missing some parts for the intank assembly. I had to rig it to get it working, but it works great. My water is now crystal clear, which is why I bough it. I used to work at a pet store and we used them on every tank. I like the way they performed.
I still want a skimmer, but I do not want to spend money on something I will have to replace down the road. If I buy one I want to go all the way. I just need to save up the dough first.

I used a Magnum on my 90 gallon and used it also when I switched up to my 125 gallon. I also really liked how well it kept the tank clean. I did notice that if it was not cleaned regulary that it's performance would drop drastically and I would get an algae bloom. Then the algae bloom would disapear as soon as I cleaned the filter. I actually removed the Magnum about 8 months or so ago because my reef had matured to where I don't think that the filter was doing anything for the tank, and now just have a skimmer.

If you were going to spend the money on the diatom filter, why don't you put that to a good skimmer, they are worth the money. Second, why make you livestock suffer, if you are going to try to save money you might want to look into some freshwater tanks instead of making your livestock suffer.
