Diatom filter worth it?

I had a friend give me one. I tried to read some about them but cannot decide their advantages/disadvantages?
And experienced reefer using these? Good? Bad? Not worth the effort?

hell yeah they are good , i point my powerheads at my LR and let the diatom filter run for a few hours...the tank is super clear!. i also recomend adding a tea-spoon of active carbon mix from vortex.

For short term clearing up after a water change or something...people use them. Longer than that, I don't recommend, personally.

I have a diatom filter and loved it to death with my freshwater setup. I did use it with my saltwater setup because i have CC as a substrate and makes it easy to clean it. Now i have a new setup with sand but i do use it as far as polishing the water.

I got one today from petssoramamart ( you know what i mean) .com and I plan to run the xl on my 150 reef to assist with a small ich issue i had that killed my tank. So any other people and or reviews would be cool.
