First you need to find out what is causing it...Most times it's tap water or over feeding. If that's the case cut back on your feeding(I would hope your not using tap water) and try moving your power heads to get a better flow in those areas. Beef up your CUC.

It is a brand new tank. What should I add to my cuc when I get one?

A good mixture of snails did a great job for me. And a couple of peppermint shrimp. I'm not a big fan of hermit crabs as they do have a tendency to dine on your snails.

If it's a brand new tank there really isnt that much you can do, it's a natural cycle your tank goes through.
Look at it this way, it's good news, your tank is headed in the right direction.
If you want to limit them, just cut the lights and it will go away...they will go away with time.

hermits, snails, crabs, shrimp, brittle stars are all great types of clean up crews.
If it is a brand new tank and you are not using a silica based sand, then only time will get rid of it!

Patriot, just sit back and relax. Your tank is brand new, I am willing to guarantee this is the problem. This will go away in time. Don't do anything drastic to change your system. Let it mature the way you set it up to, it'll be fine.

DANG!!!
The browns started showing up and I wondered how to get rid of it. So I made a small bet with my wife.
From HER research she says that I should do a 20% RO/DI water change (I filled the tank with tap originally and topped off evaporation with tap) and that will starve out the browns...
I say that if I simply turn off my lights (Current Outer Orbit MH and PC) for a couple of days this will starve out the browns...
Now, what's riding on this? Two weeks of cleaning the house every Saturday (the entire house including vacuum, shower, bath, mopping... the works) Normally this is a 50/50 split deal... but I'm really wanting a couple of Saturday's off.
But now that I've read this... I guess we'll keep splitting the work. The tank is 3 weeks old (brand new tank) so I guess it will go away on its own without me making any changes.
Glad I read this.
