Why do you think you may or may not have been ripped off. You paid the price they asked, if it was not satisfactory you should not have bought it., If it was satisfactory fine.....I sure do not get the jist of these type surveys or questions. Evidenlty you must be satisfied as you bought the darn thing.

You did pay higher than expected. But your lfs has a high markup due to the high costs associated to maintain saltwater aquaria. I sometimes buy liverock at my lfs at $8/lb. which is expensive but I like to support local stores so I don't worry too much about it.

When I had my eel, I bought him for 17.99 at an old LFS that isn't around anymore. He was 8" long. By the time he killed himself (got out, after all those years) he was close to 2'.

Maybe were martin lives theres not a lot of SWFS and no competition, ect. Yea, its more than alot of places charge but you never know about what that store did to get it either.
If successfull then in a year or 2 or 3 you want remember what you paid and will be attached to it and want care.
Of coures as chip indicated, impulse buying is never the right way to do it but I think we are all guilty of it once in a while.....

I pay more for certain fish because they come from a reputable source where they QT the fish for at least 2 weeks and make sure it is eating before it is shipped. To me it is worth it, if they are healthy.

Well actually there are 2 pet stores that takes me about 8 minutes to get there walking. and another Fish store about 4 minutes away by car. And their beginning to make a petsmart about 7 minutes away. There are alot of pet stores but where I got my eel they only specialize in saltwater corals and fish. and some freshwater.

Yes, I ended up buying salt from an LFS for $100 when I should of only paid $70. They have unusual pricing. Some things are good and when you don't expect it they get you on other stuff. They are in business to make cash, just have to expand your options and know the prices of the things you might want.

I am currently opening a saltwater fish store, and with my experience in retail locations they have to price stuff based on their overhead. some have up to 15x's mark up based on lease, employees, state taxes, shipping, and loss. If you were not satisfied then dont shop there, but remember to support your local fish stores.. when in a jam could you emagine having to wait a week or more for a emergency supply?? to be shipped to you. local shops are the back bone of the industry. without them the hobby would not be the same.
IMO

Thats your opinion and your entitled to it. But at least I do not go begging someone to do opposite of what was said like break down a setup so you can get rock or whatever when they state they will not sell things individually........evidenlty you can not follow suit either..... or comprehend whats being said....I got dibs, yea right! I still say why question what was paid by oneself. If your satifsfied why harp about it. Just like the person that thought her lfs ripped her off after spending 900 bucks........see this is my opinon and i am entitled to it as well. This is yet another case where the lfs did not twist this persons arm to get the 55 out of them did they?

Each region has diferent pricings, I personally have never seen a 15" SLE around my area so I would think that you paid a decent price.
The only way to truly judge is to compare prices at diferent fish stores in your area. If they are all reasonably similiar price wise then you got a good deal. If that shop is the only one charging that price then maybe you didn't. I know I've paid too much for fish before but I'm ok with it because I really wanted it and it was there at the time.
