Dinoflagellates...need help please

Has anyone had this before. Could use some help to resolve this. I believe it may have got out of hand with the death of a coral. It was shipped to me and it didn't last long. All other coral are great. Please help. Thanks.

So are you winding up with brown slime algae? or what?
Check your nutrient levels for nitrates and phosphates, any coloring to your water? Take a glass of your tank water in a clear glass and look at it in some good lighting or sunlight.
What was the coral that died?

Hello Thomas712,
When I do a water change the bucket has a yellow tint, but that could be from the detritus. My nitrates and phosphates are good. It was a lobophyton frag that died. No other problems ever. Not sure how serious it is to my other softies? Thanks

I would start by running a large batch of carbon for 2 days, then check the color of the water.
You don't have crushed coral substrate do you?

You might want to raise your lights a bit if you run the carbon. If you can see the tint, it has been enough to block out some light. Your corals could get burned by clearing up the water all at one time.

I have a bare bottom tank. I plan on using carbon this morning. I'm also going to remove all rock and siphon all debris. Lights are off for the day.
Some post say to start day 2 with lights on for only 4 hours. Do you agree?

LIghts on or off, if you are suffering from an algae problem then you most likely have a nutrient problem, so what about the lights, unless they are of improper spectrum.
You need to attack the nutrient problem.
You need to find the spectrum of your lights or consider the age of the lights and them loosing their spectrum. What is your lighting?
Not sure what you are testing with but sometimes yo need to get nitrate and phosphate test kits with low end testing, because you could have trace nutrient problems.
Is there an active skimmer on your stystem?
Does any mechanical filtration need changeing?
Just a few thoughts.
