directv vs. dish

I had direct, went to DIsh for a while and now I am back with DirectTV. Dish has pathetic customer service. Other than that the programming isn't much different except Direct is going to be bringing on a lot more HD channels. Also has NFL sunday ticket.

Mainly because Dish has been keeping up with the curve when it comes to HD. All new HD programming is going mpeg4. I have had an mpeg4 dvr for several months now and it works great. Directv has yet to release theirs.
I also forgot one TV provider I had. I started out HD with VOOM! but they went ---- up. Dish picked up several of their proprietary channels which is why I made the move to dish. I love the Monster channel and several other VOOM! channels. As for customer service, when I had Direct it was bad. With Dish, it is still bad. Any company nowadays has crappy customer service. You usually talk to some guy named Joe that is in Bombay that can barely speak English. But hope is on the horizon. Dish is opening a call center in Texas.

we just got direct, we had digital cable, it goes down during heavy florida rains, but comes back on in a short amount of time. funny thing is my sister lives right down the street and she never looses signal. we switched cuz its cheaper than cable. i think the picture is better than cable also.

Thanks for the reply:
I know about the MPEG4. I've got to find out when DirecTv in bringing my area up. I've had DirecTV since 1993 and I've always had good luck with it. It has gone downhill some since Murdoch bought them. He has ran it like a cable company raising rate on a regular basis. Before he bought it, I think we had one rate hike in like 10 years.
I think I going to take advantage of the ditch the dish offer comcast is offering. It's a $400 credit over a year with no commitment. I can then switch back to DirecTV as it will be MPEG 4 by then with the new MPEG4 DVR available.

Comcast has screwed me royally. We will never use Comcast again. If you decide to patronize this company I hope that your experience is better than ours was. They were constantly sneaking in fees and deceptively raising their rates every other month, Comcast is notorius for this, ask around. And the customer service was almost non existant often to the point of being rude. The technical service was also lousy, in addition to drilling several unnecessary holes through my brick wall during the installation the tech didnt bother to caulk the around the holes either and water leaked through the wall after a rain storm.
Regarding the signal. We have never lost the Dish network signal and Colorado weather conditions change almost hourly.
This type of an offer is why I tried Comcast, boy was I wrong, it was a lure. They will raise their rates after you take it, just watch. Hope you dont get hosed by them like I did.

Well, the one thing about it is there are no contracts so I can tell them to shove it anytime I want. The previous owner of my house had cable so all he has to do is hook it to the box. I have several friends that have them and they say the service is good.
One thing that may be helping is we had AT&T up until about two years ago and they caused so many problems that the city got rid of them and comcast came in. They have been been in honeymoon mode with the city walking very lightly. As long as they do that for another year, I think I'm ok.
With all the years I've been with DTV, I have three old dishes and two old receivers. I will give them the useless stuff for the deal. I actually have another friend who did this and his year of reduced rates is up. He called comcast up and said the unless they cut him a deal, he was going back to DTV. They lowered his bill by $25 a month and gave him free HBO for a year so he stayed with them because he likes their HD.

Good deal on the no committment. Can't go wrong. I just hope you aren't getting one of the Motorola HD DVRs. Well no commitment I guess you will be ok.
With Cox, I had one of the moto dvrs. Actually two. I got the second to fix the problems I was having with the first. Second did the same thing. Locked up several times a week and missed recordings. No knock on moto. They were running the software specs that Cox demanded.
For you people having rain fade issues, call and complain. You should only lose signal in the most heavy rain if your dish is properly aimed unless you are in an obscure area. Also, if you do get rain fade in HEAVY rains and your dish is properly aimed for signal strength, you can get a bigger dish that will virtually eliminate the loss of signals. IMHO an 18" dish is not adequate but that is what Dish and Direct give you.
VOOM! may they rest in peace, installed a 30" dish.

Yep, I did the same thing your friend did. When our 1 yr contract was up with Dish network they bent over backwards to keep us as a customer. We didnt have to stay and they knew it . I appreciate their customer loyalty and will stay with them. The rates have been stable and like I said earlier no problems with reception.
AT&T once billed me for residential long distance service, funny thing is I wasnt even living in the US at the time. I have never had AT&T for anything, anytime, anywhere. This is how stupid they are. To this day once a year I have to write letters to have it removed from the credit reporting agencies because AT&T refuses to do so.
Of course they cannot provide any proof or bills or history of the account but somehow they refuse to remove it. So its really no surprise that Comcast and AT&T are somehow affiliated. Each one is too large to care about individual customers, or at least this has been my experience. Hope your luck is better, Dish network has been great so far.
Good luck.

My wifes aunt has been having a similar problem to the point of harasing calls demanding that she pays a bill on phone charges that where never made. she got them removed from the companies database but then the creditors that they use started calling and demanding money and even though she had proof that the charges where dismissed the creditors say they dont care they still want the money and they well ruin her credit for it. then the creditors sell the case to other creditors and it starts all over again. I have even heard of prople paying and getting it resolved and then other copanies buy a whole bunch of case while thier in limbo between the time they are being paid and then after the bill was paid start demanding it paid again.

I really don't like either but they're better than cable. I use Directv because of the football package.

Comcast and AT&T are giants, they dont fear the average consumer one bit. I had to get a letter drafted by an attorney citing the exact code and section that stated what they had to provide me in order for me to liable for payment. Because I never had AT&T they of course couldnt provide any proof. Several weeks later the letters from AT&T stopped, the attorney told me that many businesses do this frequently and intentionally as a scare tactic because if the charges arent too much the average person will just pay them to be left alone and be done with it. Sad but true.
Tell your friend to spend the $60 bucks and have an attorney draft the letter. Then write letters to the Credit reporting agencies disputing the charge, if its unfounded they will remove it. It will probably get put back on again but I belive you have the option to add a short personal statement onto the credit report disputing the charge.

No NFL Sunday ticket makes dish network a non-option IMO. The NFL Sunday Ticket is the best. JMO
