lol youve never heard of activated carbon? also clears up water. it comes and rocks and in pads impregnated with it. it depends what kind of filter you have. it takes alot of pollutanta and stuff out of the water, and makes it really clear. but you have to be careful because its 1-expensive 2-it wears out in about 2 weeks and needs to be changed. luckily if you are using the pads, you can get sheets that you cut to size and can get a ton of filters out of. 3- it removes any medications you are using, so you should always take it out before medicating. ask about it at you LFS, its pretty much everywhere. like have you ever seen one of those undergravel filters with the riser tubes? sometimes theres a cartrige at the top with black rocks in it. thats the carbon.

OOOHHH i've used the rocks before. Maybe i could run the Rocks and the pad filter at the same time to get more of a cleaning.

sounds good. i just (like the day before yesterday-today) switched over my tanks, and im sure you know how nasty a tank looks after you do that. well i shoved AC in like everyorifice of my tank, (i put 2 in the filter, stuck one folded up in the place where my remora skimmer spits out water, rubberbanded over powerheads, and you know what? its crystal clear. like its been that way for years. i actually ADDED fish today! its crazy, like you know how you usually get amonia spikes after switching a tank? nothing. its incredible. the kind i use is HBH aqua-pure cut to fit filter pad Carbom for fresh& marine aquariums. it remover free floating waste and debris and toxins, and helps purify water (says the package.) and it cost me $8.99 for a 10" x 18" pad.

go with a sump if you can it will save you alot of trouble in the long run . put some Chaetomorpha Algae in there . i don't run carbon but if you want you can . i have a hot magnum canister filter running Turbo-Twist UV Sterilizer a micron filter witch will keep your water very clear and clean. my 75 gal reef ready tank has been up and running for a year with no problems.
