Disaster struck!!!!!!

My heater malfunctioned the other night and I came down yesterday morning to find the temperature in my tank at 97.6 degrees. I lost a Copperband Butterfly and both my Peppermint and Cleaner shrimp were cooked. I also lost a Feather duster worm. I figured it was a goner because it left its tube. Anyway, all my mushrooms have been shriveled up since then. They are not slimy or anything but they are not opened. Is there a way to tell if they are dead or is there something I can do to save them?

If there is any piece of your shrooms left they have a chance. When they die they just kind of disentigrate into nothing. It can happen very quickly too.

The shrooms are still there. They are just shriveled up like when the lights go out, only smaller. They are not mushy or anything, just not opened. The temp is fine now, back to 78.

The perfect example to always use two heaters that equal up to what the wattage is on the one larger single heater, or use a Ranco temp control which costs about $100...
There is a good chance your shrooms will be ok. Sorry about the loss.

Two heaters would not have mattered and in this instance it didnt becuase I had two in the tank at the time. The problem was that one didnt turn off which caused the water to over heat. Even with one heater, if its defective and doesnt turn off, the water is going to be overheated.

That is true but it will take a lot longer

They will probably be fine. Keep an eye on them though. If they start to disentigrate or gather strange mucus or anything like that blow it away with a turkey baster or put it in a little higher flow.

Sorry to hear that. I left my AC off last summer when I was out of town, and lost a fantatic cleaner shrimp and about a 1-foot tall colt coral. Awful feeling.
Mushrooms can come back from almost anything. I bought a mushroom frag from an online vendor last year that was absolutely rancid when it arrived. I mean disgusting! i put it in my qt, and within a few days they started to perk up. They've been in my main tank since then, and they are actually growing and spreading!

Wow, Michael, I am really sorry to hear about this.
To answer your question, the mushrooms should be able to come back as long as your water parameters do not spike as a result of this (possible bacteria die off from the high temps).
