Issue:
I changed from tap water to RO water as of about 75 days ago. I did this after a tragedy in the tank that killed off everything but my eel (upset boxfish). I removed 80% of the water and replaced it all and at the same type replace all filters and added the UV sterilizer. As of approximately 30-45 days ago I started noticing a cotton ball type of formation growing on my live rock. I pulled out the skimmer and noticed that it was growing inside of it as well. Today I noticed that one of them is growing on my powerhead. I have physically removed about a dozen of them and they are continuing to grow and currently there are about 15. They are about the size of small pebble and as large as a pea if undetected and allowed to grow, they appear to have a hollow core that goes through them. I have searched everywhere and can find nothing on this type of growth. I don't think it could be good but who knows. When I removed some of them they almost feel like cotton and easily wad up and have no significant density to them. I pray that one of you have clue as to what these little buggers are. The only fish in the tank are 5 clowns, 5 damsels and the eel ( I know the eel is a bad idea), there were 6 clowns until today and I think the eel is suspect and soon to leave!
Tank Setup:
55 Gallon, set up for 4 months
Magnum 350 Canister
Double Helix UV Sterilizer
Remora Pro Skimmer
Additional Power head
Fish:
5 Clowns
3 Domino Damsels
1 Morey eel 5 inches (soon to be pulled)
Kalkwasser is used on all water top offs. Kent liquid calcium, iodine and strontium is added as per the manufacturers recommendations.
Lighting:
130 watt compact flourescent with smartlight bulbs (2 months old)
If you could please give me some ideas I would greatly appreciate it. I have looked everywhere for info and have hit a dead end.
The temperature is 79 degrees and salinity is at 1.023. Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates are undetectable and PH is at 8.2.
Thanks in advance!!
Kevin :(

Beth,
It looks almost exactly like the small white item at the top of your photo. My digital camera kicked the bucket so let me borrow my neighbors tomorrow and I will submit a photo of it. If it is white sponge what exactly is it and do I need to get rid of it??

The small white item and the big white glob are the same things, only the one in the forefront is larger.
It is white sponge. Personally, I like sponge and encourage its growth. It certainly isn't harmful. Its not a beautiful color, but I think its interesting so, if it were me, I'd let it grow.
