distilled water vs RO/DI

I've been using distilled water instead of RO/DI and have been on the losing end of a battle with hair algae. I've got my lights down to 8 hrs feed every other day and do water changes once a week. Tank parameters are good, starting to think it's the water. Is RO/DI that much better?

I will tell you this. Everything I read says use it. I would also tell you that you can get into RODI cheap. One of 2 things with cheap.
1. If it is a quality RODI and is cheap then it will probably produce very low GPD and will take you a while depending on your needs to produce the desired water. But if you plan ahead this is not a big problem.
2. If it is cheap then you will probably get cheap. I bought a Typhoon Extreme III and it came with some nice accessories. It also produces 150 GPD. It was a breeze to set up and with starting a new tank I have already found it to be one of the best investments I have made so far. It was $269.00 or so from xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx but again very well worth the money.
Knowing that the quality of your water is not an issue will help identify other factors faster. I say eliminate all the factors you can by having the best ingredients to begin with.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Theoretically distilled should be nearly identical to RO/DI. I've found that's rarely the case. What is the TDS reading on the distilled water you're using?

Tell us more about the tank. Inhabitants, lighting, filtration, etc. etc. Distilled water is most likely not the problem. Too much nutirent feeding the algae is. Got pictures? How much do you feed? Do you ever blow the rockwork off with a turkey baster or powerhead?

The worst hair algae problems I have seen were caused by not doing water changes when curing the live rock and allowing ammonia levels to get high. In those cases it dodn't matter what the water parameters were because the algae was getting its nutrition directly from the rock.
