ditch the fluval?

It is my understanding that if one has a deep sand bed and 1 lb per gallon or more of liverock, then no additional filtration is needed. I received a 55gal with a fluval 303 for my birthday and would like to start a reef tank ( that is if I can solve my water quality issues with the present tank-please see other post).
Should I return the fluval?

Shut the fluval down and monitor your water parameters...if they change for the worse....then fire it back up.
