It is quite unusual for such a large group of seemingly experienced divers to go missing. Current sounded horrid. Is it me or do they seem to promote a dive to experience narcosis? Because that is sketchy, IMO.
For new divers - don't do STUPID stuff. Diving is NOT an adrenaline sport and anyone who does it for that is risking their life, IMO. Diving to like 50 feet is pretty safe all considering, even if your buddy takes off...even if you run out of air.
I would not go to dive shops that promote a basic go in the pool and go out diving in a few hours, as many resorts do. Run like heck from any operation like that, IMO. ASK about currents, go to well known dive locations with groups. Overall it is quite safe if you have some common sense and think things through and are naturally cautious. Things do go wrong. But there are decisions you as a diver make as well.
