DIY sump/refugium

FWIW on auto top offs.
Please keep in mind that auto top offs add water when the sump goes below a certain level.
And sump level goes down due to evaporation and blockage/failure/restrictions in the overflow/drain system.
So it is possible for the system be be adjusted correctly and not flood the display with no auto top off.
And for the display to flood because an failure in the overflow/drain kicked in the auto top off.
So IMHOyou might consider a pump turn off based on display water level.
Or just use some kind of drip system instead of an auto top off.
I would definately not recommend any top off system where the possible amount of top off added is essentially unlimited.

Guys with my mint stocking list, do i HAVE to have a sump/refugium to have long term success? Could i sub the Skimmer for a reef octopus 125g HOB? Thanks. You can run a bare bones reef and add a HOB skimmer, I did it for years. Back then all the skimmers had to be adjusted every day and most gave off micro bubbles into the DT. I would not know what would be the best HOB and I would not think there is one that is big enough for your tank. So you may need two smaller skimmers.
I would go with a sump if possible it makes things nice looking and has added filtering options that HOB does not.
