Do fish drink water?

Do fish drink water? I've always wondered this even before i was into saltwater fish.... and if they do why do saltwater fish need saltwater and freshwater need fresh?

Yeah.....it's all about evolution.....both freshwater and saltwater fishes (and their physiological systems) have adapted to specific solute concentrations in the water. Since ,for instance, saltwater fishes have lower solute concentrations than surrounding seawater. Therefore, water leaks out of their bodies through gills, etc (just a simple osmosis). So if you put them in freshwater, the opposite will occur, which is really detrimental. By the way, fishes drink water all the time, but most of them return to surrounding. Hope this answers your question in some way.

Fish need saltwater/freshwater because their bodies were made with specific environments in mind :). Just like you and I need oxygen. :joy:
