Yeah.....it's all about evolution.....both freshwater and saltwater fishes (and their physiological systems) have adapted to specific solute concentrations in the water. Since ,for instance, saltwater fishes have lower solute concentrations than surrounding seawater. Therefore, water leaks out of their bodies through gills, etc (just a simple osmosis). So if you put them in freshwater, the opposite will occur, which is really detrimental. By the way, fishes drink water all the time, but most of them return to surrounding.
