Do I have too many fish in my tank?

I don't know about "ditching the canister" filters. I don't have a nitrate problem & I have 4 of them. Seems like alot to add in 6 weeks. I set up a new one the end of February & still in the boring "cycle time". I heard that the uv sterilizer is only supposed to be used for short times & not constant is tha true?
may be a good idea to use at least one of those powerheads!!
or just get a bigger tank!

You should try to base how many fish to have on the total inches of fish then calculating it from there. Add up the total inches of your fish (taking the average adult size), then calculate 1 inch of fish per gallon.
You are allowed 28 inches of fish for your tank, if the total of inches is greater than that, then you have too many.
That is actually a dated way of *fitting* fish in a tank. You can have a long and skinny goby and the bioload from it is way less than another fish that is long, but fat and wide.

I'm using an API Saltwater Test Kit with:
High Range pH
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
and a Salifert Carbonate Hardness/Alkalinity test

Those are the same kits that I use. If you are having tank issues then please start your own thread. We will be more than happy to help!

You will see that people talk about 0.5 to 1 inch per gallon, I have always used 1 inch with no issues.
Hope this helps and makes sense
I cannot argue with this formula more strongly.
A 10 inch Lionfish, for instance, could in NO way be kept in a 10 gallon tank. Nor could a 4 inch Tang be kept in a 4 gallon tank, etc.
The *typical* formula that used to be dangled about in the SW aquarium hobby was 1 inch per 5 gallons. Even that, however, is a very poor formula.

Sorry I'm not really sure of the difference between nitrates and nitrities....we did pick up 10 hermit crabs, an urchin and another turbo today though.
Ammonia is broken down to Nitrites, which is broken down to Nitrates.
Hermit crabs can/will kill turbo snails for shells. I personally like a mizture of snails (turbos, Nass, Ceriths) a lot more than a bunch of hermits.

Okay and we might get yelled at for this (don't hurt me, I'm new
) but we don't have a qt and I'm not sure how it works/what it is....is it a separate tank connected to the big tank?
