do i need a hob?

i bought a hob tetra tec 150 before i new anything about the trop fish game...i am wondering that if i can find a small enough protien skimmer for my 30g tank could i totally do away with my hob filter and run only the protien skimmer?

you can find skimmers, like a prizm. I'd still run the filter pad though and change it every 2 weeks at the latest.

i have been changing one pad every week and rotating one then taking it out the next week etc....i just do not have room for a skimmer in addition

How much LR do you have?

around 70lbs or so

With that much LR I think you're okay w/o the skimmer as long as you don't overstock.
