Do I need a new impeller, or a whole new pump?

The pump on my ASM g2 skimmer doesn't always start right up. I have taken it out and made sure it's clean in there, but sometimes I have to mess with it to get it to start. I don't want to waste money on the impeller if it is the pump that's bad.

I have read the same thing from other reefers and I am starting to think that this is normal for that pump. :%%:

I ended up needed a new impeller when mine started doing that. IMO, if you need a new impeller, just get a whole new pump.

there is quite a difference in price between the pump and the impeller.
if a new impeller is the problem and would fix it, why should i replace the whole thing?

Just speaking from experience, the impeller would only last so long and then I'd need to replace it again. After I finally went with a new pump, it lasted a lot longer. It may have just been my pump, but since I got the new pump, I've had no issues. I just felt like with mine, once the impeller went, it kept happening. You can try the impeller first, that might be the only issue you have.

If you're happy with the pump you have, until this problem, you could buy an impeller first and if that doesn't fix the problem just buy another of the same pumps and you'll already have a spare impeller.
But if it's a cheap / poorly rated pump to begin with, probably better to just replace it.

did you buy another of the same pump? or a different brand?
I bought the same. I originally had a 7000 on my ASM G3 and eventually went to a brand new 5000 model.
