Do I need a sump for a 45 gal?

I am new....many dumb questions to follow in the future. I am wondering if i need a sump. I just found out what it is and think it's a good idea but confusing. Is it absolutley necessary or can my tank go on w/o it for now.
Right now i have 5 damsels, lr, ls, and a carrot sponge. I want to keep it fish only for now til i get the hang of this......

You dont need one but it wont hurt ot have one. I would get one if I had the money and actually knew what i was doing but it is not necessecary.

when i plan on upgrading to having plants, inverts, and/or corals would i need one then or is it just an extra thing to have? thanks.

you mean at swf.com i can buy a sump for $60? Yes, I plan on being at 45 for at least a year. What is a canister filter, fluval 203/303. I have a wet/dry 60 gallon provec filter, no protein skimmer yet.
