Do I need anything else for a 29gallon QT?

I have a 29g QT with the UG filter and a skilter. What I'm wondering is should I get a powerhead to make the UG more useful? Does a powerhead really help and does anyone do them in reverse? Also, my filter is just right of the center of the tank and it seems like the water on the left really never makes it back into the filter-is this possible? where should you put a hang on filter-the left, right, or middle? The tank also only has one light, do I need two lights or is 1 fine?

With a 29gal tank,I dont see why you need an UGF if you have a skilter running. I've got a skilter in my 40gal and it does a great job by itself. It sits to the right side, and a powerhead on the left for circulation. With all the problems that UGF's cause,I wouldn't use one if someone gave it to me. STEVE

I agree with Mr. Salty. I would get rid of the undergravel. I would add a skimmer with your skilter. This will help. I don't think the skilter's skimmer works well enough (just my opinion). Nothing replaces regular water changes. The carbon in the skilter should be replaced regularly also otherwise it will leach back "stuff" into your tank. If you must use the undergravel, I would use 2 powerheads (one on each corner of the tank).

There are ways to make the skilter's skimmer work just fine. I use a small piece of lexan to block off the lower 1/4 of the filter inserts. This raises the water level in the filter. Then remove the air regulater valve and attach a long hose(about three feet)as a muffler to quiet the thing down. This modification only takes a minute, and workes great.( you could even use duct tape to block off the bottom 1/4 of the filter) STEVE
