Depends on fish load, # you like to feed, it could only help in maintaining water quality. I like sump filters with a large macroalgae chamber which absorbs fish waste product as their nutrients. My magnum pro 350 canister filter makes a world of difference in my 55g which I realized when it was off for a week.

I run an emperor filter in the sump on my 72 bow. It is an option that not everyone takes on a reef tank. I do believe it keeps the water cleaner. I just have to clean the media regularly so that detritus does not accumulate. If you choose to run carbon in your filter you will have to keep in mind that carbon bonds to trace elements, thus removing them. Therefore, it is necessary to add trace elements regularly to compensate for the ones carbon “sticks” to.
