Hello all,
I've had my tank running now for just over 9mos. In terms of livestock I have:
Mated Pair False Perc Clowns
2 Green Chromis
1 Firefish Goby
1 Sixline Wrasse
1 Bicolor Blenny
1 Coral Banded Shrimp
Numerous Hermits, Snails and a Sand-Sifting Starfish
40+LBS of Live rock
Lobed Leather
Zoa's
Mushrooms
Favia Brain Coral
Lobiphilia Brain
Candy Canes
Duncan
Suncorals
Feather Dusters
Green Star Polyps
Blue and Pom Pom Xenia
Now I've been wondering if my HOB Emperor filter is TRULY necessary?? With the amount of rock, and my CPR Backpack 2 Protein skimmer, do I need to be running a HOB Filter? I do change the filter/carbon every 2 weeks.
I appreciate the help and thoughts in advance!!
Justin

no need to have the filter .looks like your tank is well established with the lr.
i have never run a hob filter.

I respectfully disagree. The filter will remove particulate waste from the water column and lighten the load on your DTs natural filter. It also allows you to run carbon in the event of chemical warfare engaged by your coral.
I'd leave it if I were you.
Can you move it all the way to the right so the intake is not right in the middle?

+1. Keep it for the extra filtration of food particles and the ability to run carbon (which i would be doing now anyways).

Cool, thanks!
Yeah I guess I could swap my Skimmer and my filter so that big dong isnt right in the middle...

Thanks everyone, keep 'em coming.

i dont see the point of the filter.maybe if there isnt a sump to put the carbon in.
i cant see why anyone wouldnt run a sump anymore .
it is a simple setup.
no mechanical filter will do the job that lr will do after it has been running for a while.
alot of people dont run carbon i do but it is not neccesary.
like i said i have never run a mechanical filter in 25 years.
take it out for a couple weeks and check the water quality.
i am sure it will be the same.
but weirder things have happened.

I notice that you didn't mention having a sump. With no sump I highly recommend that you keep the hob filter. The water from the return will break the surface tension of the surface and allow gasses to escape.
Keep in mind you need about 20 times the volume of your tank being cycled through your pumps per hour.
