Don't panic, Yes they do. I had two that dissapeared for about a month. Later my kids found the shells floating. A bout a month later the two reapeared.

kay good to hear because one of my sally light foots had a run in with my puffer and he got two of her legs, she's alright though, hopefully she'll be more careful. When I switch over from cc to live sand i'm going to see if I can catch the sally's and take them for a little ride to my LFS for store credit.

as you have found out puffers can will and do eat crabs and snails.. I have a tank with a stars and stripes puffer a porky and a dog face and all three wttack anything that moves in te tank other than them. including algae that might be blowing in the current and shredd it to pieces..
what kind of puffer is it?

its a porc puffer, and yes i found out the hard way about the crabs. Didn't think they would eat snails though, how odd.
BTW I'm surprised you are able to keep those three species of pufferfish together without them attacking each other, I've read puffers can't be kept together.

I LOVE porc puffers. Unfortunately I keep crabs too. i NEVER keep a puffer with a crustacean, so I cannot tell you whether your crustacean was molting or eaten........sorry.

its alright read above, im pretty sure it just molted. I've never seen the crabs come out so I doubt my puffer would.

Serioulsy, Im not flaming you or anybody.
I merely want people to be prepared for death of their "pets" when they decide to go marine aquarium. I am not against any of this!!!!In fact I think I am in love with you, no offense intended.

DEATH, WHAT DEATH???
I hope to get more decades out of my marine pets, only a few fish would I settle for 5 yrs, and of course, many inverts.
But I want to see decades, and realistically, I am well on my way to seeing these fish live for that long.

maybe I am not quite recognized here. The fish that i WANT to flush is now swimming in 20G of pure 1.027 "Instant Ocean" (quarantine) saltwater in case I cant sell the rat. I "torture" him/her so that this little fish knows I HAVE much more important life in my "show" tank....just in case anybody doesnt want to buy him/her for a buck.

what is it, and how much do you wnat for it??
making your first post like that does not help your credibility on this board. In fact, making that a posta t all, will not help you here. most members would frown upon it. But many would consider rescuing a fish, if you just asked.

i will admit that death is a part of life be it cats, dogs, humans, or fish. But it is not something you should be familiarizing yourself with or your children with, death is not the aim of this hobby. Yes it is a reality that is horrible when it occurs but you make it sound like you are impressing it onto your children so they can handle it like it will occur often.
I admit that my first fish were damsels, but my tank was completely cycled and yes they can be agressive little guys, but they are still in my tank. I love them as much as any of my other fish and I would be just as sad if one of them passed away as I would be if my porc puffer passed away.
You can't play favorites with life and say that my dollar damsel's life is a sacrifice for my $100 fish's life, that just isn't right.
You have very little money invested in this fish, give it away, take it back to the store, don't flush it because it's served its purpose.
Death may be a part of this hobby but it is a part that most of us try everything in our power to avoid.

I agree with all that you have just said, and I try not to introduce death into OUR children's minds. but I still have this killer to deal with.
