im not exactly sure if we really know what we are doing, but i know that most people in this hobby including myself really care about our tanks, even if iit is becuase we spend so much money on them.
on the other hand there are people like my boss who takes what they learn and see happen in their mini reef and try to help the world out.
my boss, Alan Lowe, has the patent for restocking reefs with propagated coral from the wild. In the year 2000, he set up a large operation on the island of Dominica. He had a 50f long x 30 ft wide x 12 ft deep tank which he connected directly to the ocean. He helped REEFBALL design their first reef ball, and actually stocked reefs with coral that he propagated in his tank. In total he took 11,000 of his coral frags in one year and made an artificial reef for the island of Dominica. Now, how long would this take in nature.
Unfortunately, his company suffered a hostile takeover from his investors after they recognized the potential, but they soon went outa business because he was the only person who knew how to make his corals grow so fast.
Take the time and Search his name on the internet, and youll see that sometimes even people who start out small, but take the time to understand what they are doing, can actually help the entire world.
This to me makes it all worth it.
