Do you have a powerhead that goes off with a timer at night?

I was thinking about having my more powerful powerhead on a timer and have it turn off when the lights turn off and then come back on in the morning.
Is this a good idea for a calming night effect or will it cause some coral to move around at night and then get blown away when it comes back on.

That is actually a good idea. Ive heard of people doing it. It kinda imitates their environment with tide changes and current changes.

I have a 90gal tank and have 900 maxi jet and 1200 maxi jet along the back of the tank both with a flow detector which spins around. Facing the tank on the right side I have a 600 maxi jet and sure flow 1600 attached and last I have a sieo which is midway on my tank creating flow. They are left on 24/7 and have been running for 5 years now.

thats a really interesting concept.. in our big tank we have our powerheads on these micro timers, they turn on and off every 20 seconds, and run for approx 40 seconds while they are on.

i thought about this before but i wanted to do it with my closed loop pump, but i was told that the water that sits in the pipes may foul the system when the pump turns back on. this seems very unlikely to me since the pump would only be off for 8hrs but i havent had the guts to try it yet

Do the waves in the ocean reefs stop at night? Don't know the answer to this as am not a diver and have not read anything about the movement of water at night.
Hey nice new avatar by the way, very curly BROWN hair.

i stay 2 minutes from the beach and every night that i've been there the water has been 10x calmer than when we're there in the daytime. i'm not sure if there's much benefit to shutting the pump but it was worth discussing.

During the day the sun heats the earth which makes wind, and wind makes waves. So at night I would guess that there are less waves since there is less wind.

Interesting discussion here. I wonder if the water under the surface maintains any more even movement during the evening than the surface water does.

I would just think it would be beneficial to the fish in the tanks so they could sleep more easily without having to fight the powerheads?
Could it hurt the corals though or are they going to close up anyway? Interesting concept.....I think I might put my more powerful powerhead on my timer and my less powerful one I will leave on 24/7..... It's worth giving it a try.

thats wrong, the sun don't make waves and wind. the moons gravatational pull is what determines the tides
