Do you have lights in your sump?

The latest filtration seems to be this miracle mud and products like it. They require lighting 24/7. This got me to thinking. Currently, I have a 55 gallon sump under my 180 aquarium and hidden in my wood cabinet. It is kept totally in the dark. Is this bad? Does it really matter if a regular sump has light? My sump does not have plantings or mud but I was thinking that if I supplied light down there I would get some algae or other plant life to grow and this may help with the filtration process. What are your thoughts? Should I just leave well enough alone? I don't have any problems but I love to tinker with stuff.

not an expert by any means but I would say if you just have a sump with a skimmer then you would not want light which would promote algae growth which would need to be constantly cleaned up. If you wanted to seperate a section of your sump for a small refugium then you would want light for the macro to grow in this seperate section.
