Do you help upside down snails

I have a new cleaning crew and I noticed one of my snails (turbo/astrea) had fallen off the glass onto the bottom and was upside down. I left him overnight hoping he'd figure out how to flip over and get around again, but in the morning he was still there (almost completely out of his shell). I tipped him right side up.
Would a snail in such a position (unable to latch onto anything) eventually abandon its shell? Would it eventually die?

Astreas and Mexican turbos can right themselves easily. I noticed this frequently shortly after I added them to my tank. They would often spend an entire day upside down. After they had acclimated (about a week) they right themselves very quickly.
There are a few species of snails that cannot right themselves and would eventually die. Snails do not abandon their shells while they are alive except in cartoons. Hermit crabs can.
