My neighbor has a hookah. They have direct Armenian heritage, so its apart of their culture. They smoke shisha, and it smells good most of the time. I never have, just simply because I dont like tobacco period.
Funny thing is, it looks like one of the craziest, most illegal instruments youll ever see, but its really not.

See now this is getting some where! To clear some things up yes it is flavored tobacco. Honestly tho it is made with smashed up fruit / molasses / and about 0.10% PURE tobacco leaves. So ya you dont get all the crap like a cigarette gives you. Also for all of you that dislike tobacco there is also now herbal shisha, no tobacco what so ever in it! We have a few hookah lounges here where I live. I even built one of them. I find ALOT of the college type people come in there. Honestly tho I see it more and more that people are turning Hookah Lounges in to wanna be bars and or clubs. That is why I no longer go, I have 6 of my own so no need to go pay to use one. To touch on what Mimzy said it really does all matter where you get the shisha from! There are some that smell just like a cigarette and some that are really smooth and full of flavor. Any of you looking to try it I recommend the following brands: Fusion or Fumari. If you live in down town San diego there is the Fumari Hookah lounge on E st I think. REALLY nice place. Or if any of you are in ABQ pm me and I can show you a few!
Just to touch on the use of illegal stuff in it, if you do some research they were never designed for that. They were used in the middle east as tobacco pipes always was and will be. I do not in any way shape or form condone this but some people... Well we will just leave it at that

I've tried it, but didn't inhale.... promise

We had a middle-eastern restaurant in the neighborhood with hookahs that they'd bring to you. It's not bad at all, I did like the raspberry the most. The first time we went there; it was an odd feeling smoking outta that thing in public but ya get over that pretty quick. Not the smoke filled room that some might imagine, seemed to me to be just enough to supply a slight fragrance to the air.
Sadly, the restaurant didn't make it but the food was good, people were nice, pleasant ambiance, just not an idea that works here I suppose.

Smoking raw tobacco products is certainly more healthy than processed cigarettes but it still is unhealthy. If cigarette smoke bothers you as far as allergies goes so will hookah or most any other smoke.
I am old enough to remember when head shops were still legal. I used to go to a record store (Records were the things we old farts listened to before CD's
) and that is where I first saw Hookahs. The had some interesting stuff you could buy to smoke in them but I think most people were just buying the plain tobacco bricks and drooling hash oil on them.

I can't stand the dang things, I used to have friends in college that would smoke sashi or whatever it is called. They'd be like oh man it is soo cool. Yeah man you should do it. Far out man. It was just dumb. One day the popo came out, thinking it was pot. That was funny.
I swear occifer it isn't pot. Smell it.
well it doesn't smell like tobacco to me. (while he snuffed out his last red)
It was pretty funny stuff.

mmm hookahs good. at the hookah bar around here you can pay like 3 dollars extra and get "premium" flavors where they mix three or four flavors and give them cool names. apple cinnamon a la mode - apple cinnamon and vanilla... tell me that doesnt sound delicious. Rumor is you can give them even more money n they'll add a lil somesome in there for you ^_^ most of you prolly remember my stance on that one...

Any one actually own one?
My friend bought a really cool antique copper hookah... she paid $400
We were using it last year during an earthquake and it fell over and the coals burned her floor!
A middle eastern girl in my speech class actually brought her hookah in for her demonstration speech and the professor let her light it up in class lol

Ya I have my fair share of holes in the carpet. 400 is not to bad depending on what kind it was. There is ways of preventing the burning tho.

like I said, we own two. we've got a big blue one with gold leaf detailing and hand painted designs all over the base. It's a two-hose unit and the hoses have gold threads woven throughout, and all the hardware is gold. The second is a much smaller Hooka; it's hand blown glass but it's very heavy duty. I like this one best 'cuz the colors are so nice; very deep green bowl with a dark blue hose and silver hardware. I'm not sure what the hose is made of, but it feels like some kind of wood composite.
