Do you like um long or tall?

Right now I have a 120 tall in my room with a DIY stand that has 2 ten gallons under the 120. My 120 is a supper aggressive and one of the 10’s is a hospital/iso tank and the other is a dwarf lion tank. Today I was at the LFS and I saw a 55 long for $80. It wasn’t drilled and it was for the tank only, they said they would give me the lights and the glass hood for $99. I really want to have a reef but all I really have experience in is aggressive so that’s why I wanted to get the long instead of the tall. Which would be better for a reef tank? I know the long would be better for predators but I don’t know what would be best for a reef. I would have to move a lot of stuff out of my room to make space for the long but if I get the standard size it might fit. I would also like to try my hand at a DIY wet/dry under the stand. If I want to do this should I get the tank drilled through the bottom or the back? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!!!

Personally I would say long, I'm sure someone will disagree with this, but you will get better light penetration with a long versus a tall aquarium. It will also make placement of new specimens and rearranging rockwork a lot easier.

we like the long ones- if you do get the 55- most of todays tanks have a tempered bottom so you will not be able to drill it without breaking it you will have to go through the side:)

80 bucks for a 55 is a pretty good deal. As for the lighting, I'd skip it unless it is at least 150 watts, you'll just have to replace it with something more powerful later. 3 to 4 watts per gallon for reef, some would say you can never have enough or too much.

I like the long as well. If you want to do a reef you can go either way but a long would look nicer.

doing a reef tank that was taller would cost more as far as lighting goes- you would need a highter wattage to get down into the tank

Thats true but if you go long you have to buy more lights to completly cover the tank. I don't know the measurements for a tall compared to the long but the norm for MH is one light every 2 ft. this is JMO
