do you need to test KH for sps

Absolutely. A kH between 8 and 12 is desirable.

12 is just fine for SPS coral.

it's really not the number that is most importatnt; it's the stability of said level that matters the most. That being said an dKh of 12 IS defnitely on the high side. Stability is key, and I try to keep my dKh at 8.5-9. If your tank is @ 12 one day and a week later you test and it's fallen to 8, that that is not good even though 8 is closer to the desired range. Sudden spikes/dips are bad and is usually one of the biggest stresses to SPS corals.
