Do you quarantine

Do you quarantine every thing that goes in your tank? Every coral, every fish? If you do whats your quarantine setup? How long do you put something in QT?

i dont quarantine because i dont have the room/ money for one. i just do an iodine dip on my corals.
i only have two fish who are perfectly healthy and if i decide to add another, ill just hope he doesnt have ick and acclimate him correctly.

I quaranteen corals if they are from a tank that I dont know, I have a couple rare corals that I wont risk losing, I just throw together a ten gallon when I need to so Its not wasting space (you know how many pets I have space is at a premium) fish I dont quaranteen, My LFS does that for me, (I used to manage that store and a bunch of my friends work there so they let me know whats going on right down to the nitty gritty)

Not trying to start a war....IMO, you my friend are playing with fire. You have been lucky, and that is where I will leave it.

:notsure:
Water parameters can help, but certainly not be thought of as a substitute for a QT.
And I'm jealous of you all with your local stores that QT. Every store I've been to in the DFW metroplex have interconnecting display tanks and add fish straight from the bag to the tank.

Humm. Thank you all for the answers. I cant imagine a LFS quarantining a fish for 3-4 weeks. Thats just too much cost to hold on to the stock. Heck some stores have the bags float for 20 minutes and dump right into their tanks.
I figure it like this. I wont shake hands with anyone that looks sick. But I do shake alot of hands. Eventually I will get sick. In my case I will heal.
I would never buy a sick looking fish. But I do buy fish. Eventually I will get a sick one. The real question is do I loose the one fish or two or all of them?
I have not ever had a qt tank but now that I want to add a fish and new corals to my well established tank I am starting to rethink the QT tank.
I am planning to set up a QT / propagation tank. Its contents if they get diseased will not kill my big tank.

I use a 29 gallon tank for my quarantine tank (one of the sets you can pick up at Walmart for less than $75). I quarantine all fish for 3 weeks. I currently have 6 fish in quarantine and so far 3 are showing signs of having Ich. All of these fish were purchased from SWF.com and were put into quarantine immediately upon arrival. I am now conducting hyposalinity on this tank in hopes of killing the Ich. Chances are that had I placed these fish directly into either of my display tanks that I would now have Ich in these tanks instead of just in my quarantine tank (which has no live rocks). Hopefully in about 4 weeks I'll have 6 new fish free of parasites that I can add to my display tanks. If you've experienced an outbreak of Ich in your display tank you'll understand why it is important to quarantine all new fish.

i think people just dont realize all the tanks are connected together, and they think the lfs is quarantining.

i personally will QT any fish that are not wrasse, mandarin or gobie.
man not trying to flame but there a lot of shocking responses on here, and it seems to me a lot of you guys are skating on thin ice. i have seen 2 ick outbreaks from putting in fish with No QT, and the other from putting in a fish that was 3 weeks into a QT period. as mentioned earlier, if you really believe that a LFS (unless you worked there) will hold your fish in a true QUARANTINE tank - not in a show tank with sand in it - for 6 weeks, then i may have a bridge or two to sell ya. Even if they kept the fish in a tank for a month, a) usually that tank will be connected to a portion, if not ALL the tanks in the store, hence all fish are exposed. and B) the fish could have it in small amounts that wont come to fruition until stressed again by being moved to your tank. and C) if the fish didnt have it, the stage of the ICK life cycle that thrives in calcerous material before it leaves to find a fish to latch onto, will be alive and well in any sand your fish is swimming over.
even from purchasing fish online, from here and elsewhere i have seen it. I have seen ich appear 12 hours before the 4 week period was up. if i didnt QT, a disaster would have struck. i have gotten fish that have had black ick, and lymphocystis - so what then. all of these symptoms appeared at least 1 week after i got the fish. If you dont care about the amount of money you have invested in fish live stock and the well being of your pets, than by all means, drop em right in there....

No sand is a QT tank? Why not? What about rocks?
If you dont use sand and rocks what process the poo?

now i immediately start the Hypo process. find out how in the FAQ section i think.
make sure you have a good PH / ALK buffer on hand, cause it can get out of whack.
this takes 4 weeks to do anyway, and doesnt hurt the fish if they dont have it. this way if it was the case like mine where you waited 4 weeks and the last day the fish had ick, starting hypo at that point means 2 months of total QT period...

i am totally flabberghasted at this post.
i wouldn't risk getting my existing fish sick, i wouldnt trust a lfs to quarantine a fish for 3-4 weeks.
I suspect there's going to be a lot of people posting about ick soon or too embarassed to say anything about it.
