Do you think a protein skimmer is NECESSARY?

Personally, i don't. i just set up my 75 gallon and i'm debating over getting an awesome filter , or skimmer. i've had sucess without one, and i know other people who do not use skimmers
what is your thought?

Hopefully Bronco will step in on this one. I don't think he has ran a skimmer at all on his 75reef. To be honest, I had to talk him into running a skimmer on his new 500+gallon system. There are many people that have very healthy tanks that don't skim.

IMO This question does not have a yes or no answer. It completely depends on the individuals tank. Nutrient import and export ratio to your bio load. Some people feed heavily, for coral growth or just for having healthy fat fish. If your tank is heavily fed and your live stock and bacteria cannot keep up with it then you may need one. Others may not depending on their maintenance schedule and what, how and when they feed. I dont believe a skimmer can hurt, but I dont always believe one is necessary. JMO.

As long as you don't have a problem with doing large water changes frequently and you have a FO, softie, or LPS tank, you can get by without a skimmer. But for an SPS tank, a skimmer is a must IMO. I've never seen a nice SPS tank without a skimmer. Skimmers do more than just take out DOC's, they also increase ORP and DO levels.

agree here as well...I have not run a skimmer on my 75 for almost the entire time....BUT, I only had a couple fish in there as well so my bioload was pretty small...I do like the idea of them as well, I just think some people go overboard with it...my friend also has a 75 heavily stocked, who does not have a skimmer and his tank couldnt look better..his sps grow like mad, and his fish mate constantly...but he also does a 10% water change every week I believe...so kinda of up in the air, whatever suits your tank best.
