Pretty much...I've yet to see the PPFD of 250 watt DE bulb that comes close to a 400 watt SE bulb..Let's take the new 400 watt 20K XM bulbs I'm trying out. The PPFD is 128 on the standard M59 ballast (that's pretty low) ..The best 250 watt DE I can find is 136. That's the DE 250 watt 10K XM on the M80 ballast. The 400 watt 10K SE XM on the HQI ia 202, standard is 172. Most of the 250 watt DE's are less then 100. (all this info comes from Sanjay)
The DE's might shine deeper in the tank but I feel (I did use em for a year and a half) that's more of a flashlight effect coming from the small pendants. The spread isn't no where near what the good SE pendant can do..
I've read from a few different people who have tested the M80 ballast (250 watt HQI) they say its draws more amps on startup then the 400 watt HQI ballast.
I guess what I'm saying is their not better then 400 watt SE, watt per wat their about the same, I hope.
I just traded for a new 250 watt DE setup so I might try it out just for the hec of it.
