Does a scooter blenny need pods?

I'm new to Sw. I have a scooter blenny, a wrasse, and temporarily a yellow tang and 2 green chromis (long story). I bought the blenny from the LFS, who also picked out my frozen food. No mention of any kind of "pod", but in reading this site I see that blennies eat pods. Mine seems to eat just about anything I put in there (a variety of shrimp, algae, spirulina). If he needs pods, will any of my other fish/clean-up crew eat them, also? And if not, what will happen if I put a ocuple hundred in my tank and the blenny is the only one eating them?

Not sure. I've had him a little over a month and he seems fine. It's a 40 gal tall tank. When people say "pods", they're referring to acropods (sp?) or some other tiny little fish, right?

"Pods" is a generic term for small crustaceans. (Amphipods, isopods, copepods, etc.)
In a 40 gallon tank a dragonet will quickly devour all of them, even if you add them, unless you have some sort of refugium to breed large amounts.
Monitor him closely.

Lets say you know for a fact that you have pods, becasue you have a fuge with millions and you see them at night with a flashlight, BUT you never see them in the day, DOES a mandarin have some kind of sense/instinct too find them when they are soooo hidden?

So how often would I need to put a bag in there? I have an extra 20 gal tank (complete setup, was FW), could I raise them in there?

Keep in mind pods are tiny to you but not to a small fish.

A Fuge is a seperate "habitat" (aka refugium=refuge) free of predation. Some people incorporate one in their sumps. Just having a sump, however, does not automatically give you a refugium.

Great! I googled it and found out some more info. I read that corals and most fish will also eat pods. Is this true?
On this site, the copepods come about 200 per bag. For my blenny and other fish (no corals yet), how often would I need to put a bag of ~200 in the tank?

I have no idea, that's why I'm asking.) I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to turn my spare tank into a pod farm, or if I only need to buy a $10 bag of them once a month.

If they cannot reproduce in your tank you'd be going through them fairly quickly.
Kind of like asking how many rabbits you'd have to throw in a 1 acre pen with a coyote. Eventually the coyote's gonna eat them all....

to keep any dragonet you need to have(recommended) a fuge. There has to be a safe spot for the pods to reproduce. Unless you have a larger tank with about 100+lbs of rock, it will be very difficult for the pods to reproduce. Get some cheato, some prebottled pods, and start a little fuge. You can do it with a tupperware bin even, it doesnt have to be fancy. You can also put a strawberry-type woven little basket upside down (like a little dome) in the tank and cover it with small peices of LR. The pods will be able to reproduce in the 'dome' and then crawl out safely when they are ready. Some people put some live rock and caulerpa in thier overflow box like a mini- in-tank fuge and the pods crawl out when they are ready. Some people suction a little 'soap dish' (clear plastic thing that holds bottles of shampoo etc. in the shower and has little holes in it) and fill it with cheato- right inside the display tank.
I think that you will be seeding your tank more like 1x/week rather than 1x/month if you dont have a little pod factory going. Try to train him to eat prepared foods but it isnt easy, and not all of them take well to it. remember that other fish like pods too, so if you have other fish, they will also help deplete the pod population.
i have a mandarin dragonet.. also in a tank about your size, mine is a 44g corner (tall). i only have him and a goby in the tank (as far as fish). I keep a out of tank fuge, and also a mini fuge in the overflow just for fun. The pods crawl out of the overflow and he pecs them right off the plastic. Mine also eats prepared food(thank god) so that helps ALOT.
Heres a pic of a pod. These are what you are looking for in your tank, or more specifically- on your glass- where it will be easy to spot them. the black area is a PENNY for size comparison. They are tiny little critters.

Karen. You have to watch out for some of these "resident experts" on this site. They see the word Dragonet and the first thing they think of is giant tank filled with live rock and a fuge full of cheato. If you noticed, none of them made mention to you saying that it was actually eating frozen foods except the one asking if it was spitting it back out.
Fact is, Scooter Dragonets are the easiest dragonet to get trained on frozen foods. Many will already be eating frozen foods in the LFS. I currently have one and I have her trained on frozen foods. Yes, she still picks pods off the LR but she loves frozen mysis. If you see yours eating then I wouldnt worry about buying pods. Just be sure its stomach doesnt look sunk in and it will be just fine...

the arguement (which will always exist) is its not as nutritional as pods. which i'm not going to argue, I've kept my scooter alive for about a year on frozen in a 29g AGA. For months I had a mandarin in there until i gave it to a relative. i also agree they are easiest.

Scooters can be trained to eat frozen. Mandarines can be trained as well, but will become immune dificient if they do not have pods. Scooters are a little more versitile in their diet. You can add vitamines to their food, but they will require diligence to ween them. Add pods to a small dish along with some frozen mysis loaded with vitamines and some fresh garlic.
