I think you should start with a small out-of-home business and see if you're still interested. That way you're not going to have to worry too much about overhead, bills, etc.

Uys I'm not going for the compitition eliminating storefront here. I'm buying a frag tank and mh light and using all of my exsisting dumps etc. It will be around 200 for the tank and I need to look into lighting. The tank is going to be 36x36x8 so it's not going to be a huge production. The only overhead I anticipate is that off of an ---- store subscription, advertisement and coral cost. My parents will be taking care of most of the rest considering I live with them still.
Am I missing a major factor?

In that case, I'd suggest you getting very involved with your local reef club. And peddling it there as a serious hobbyist, (most don't mind selling alot of frags "in promotion of aqua-cultured quality corals") Or don't mind if you sponsor them, and sell them...
Play the networking game, and spend some time making friends, you'll get a loyal following of frag purchasers (especially if you have a baller tank)

Think about your tank deminsions. 36x36 is hard to light. I'd think about using T5 fluorescents and design the frag tank to accomodate the 54 watt 48" lamps. Mom and Dad might be paying the electric bill but help them where you can. If you plan to expand your operation at some point the less you dance with Mr. electricity the better.

I had a frag tank and grew frags in it and took frags from my main tank. I sold a lot on c-list and that last final sell off was enough to pay for the project after a year basically and had 50 or so frags left over.
You can self sustain if you really enjoy it but I would recommend trading a lot of frags to get new varieties -- keep up your levels for growth and have quality halides on them and good flow. Shipping becomes a pain --- definately try local and get involved with local reef clubs. (sorry only kinda half answering this trying to watch sherlock holmes :)

I agree with a shorter tank.. more space and less depth means more coral... how about a kiddy-pool? :p

Yea I plan to try to get really involved with my reef club if possible but the only thing I have going against me is that I'm only 16. I feel like that might turn a way a lot of potential customers so I wanted to try to give the appearance of an older and larger business online.
You don't think a single mh can light a 36x36? I thought it would be easier and cheaper to light than the 48x18 I was also looking at.

You're looking at it all wrong, working a local reef club, you need to appear as a hobbiest who likes propagating frags, (who unknown to most, runs it really efficiently and quietly turns a few bucks).
Personally most frag setups I see would use 2 MH's to light a 36 x 36.

You might get away with a single halide if you use a Lumenarc reflector and a 400 watt lamp a bit higher above the tank, like 14 to 18 inches or so to allow the light to spread. Would also make it easier to work on the tank having the light up out of your way.

I agree with that as far as reef clubs go but don't you think I should try looking a little bigger online?
Yea I guess you guys are right. I was thinking of like 400 but a 150 wouldn't even be close to that...
So a 48 by 18 would be better you think? It just sounds like it would be annoying to work on it because the tank would only be 6 high and taking off the lights could be annoying. So how much would a t5 unit like that run me? Any good brands to look at? Novaextreme?

Actually I fond a 48x24x6 for the same price. Do you think that or the 8 high for 20 bucks more would be better for a frag tank? I expect the eggcrate to take up a few inches...
