Does anyone have a reef without a refugium?

Can I have a successful, full scale reef with just a good canister filter and skimmer?

I 'technically' dont have a fuge because my fuge is a stand-alone (not directly connected by waterflow to the DT).
I just swap bundles of cheato in and out of the fuge and DT for the pods. (IMO the less pumps the better, Floridas hurricanes and power outages= higher possibility of overflows! So Im trying to lessen my chances.)
To take care of extra trates and such, you can get some plants in the DT and they will at least help. I have blade and grape caulerpa in the DT and it keeps algae and trates in check. Looks kinda cool too.
You can do a soapdish fuge too

i have a 55 reef without a fuge or sump. i use a Bac-Pac skimmer that has a bubble trap box on the return. i have my cheato in the bubble trap box and works great

I have a bubble trap box on my remora pro skimmer that I could do that with too.
Help me out with a silly newbie question....what is cheato and where do I get me some!

I just added a HOB fuge to my 100g I like it a lot...

Just circulates water threw to DT. So my Cheato does what it does, and my DT gets all those wonderful Pods my fish love so much....
