Starfishes will regenerate a lost appendage. My question is why did they burn themselves, are they suicidal? :D

The arms should re-generate. I have not idea why it held on to the heater, unless it got caught between the heater and another object.

I have no idea why the starfish stayed on the heater after it turned on?!!! All I know is when i woke up this morning it had wrapped itself halfway around the heater and then the heater must have turned on, but why did it hang on so long that it burned itself? I am seriously confused? Thanks for your replies. I am beginning to believe he is suicidal. I also caught on to the conversation about cc as apposed to lsb or whatever and although i am just a three month junkie i have had great success with my water quality with the cc and 18lb. of live rock in a 20gl. tall.

has your starfish been looking despondant lately? have you checked his wrists for self inflicted wounds? How about getting a phyche consult? Depression can be treated- there are a lot of good meds out there. :)
I have some more helpful ideas, so read on :)
I am just guessing here, but maybe the starfish wrapped himself around the heater when it was off, and not being a warm blooded animal (i am assuming theye are not warm blooded), when the haeter turned on, if it was a gradual enough temperature change, he may not have realized the temperature was rising. In biology lab, we did this experiment where we put a frog into hot (not boiling) water, and he jumped right out. we took the same frog (we had a sick biology teacher, ok?) put him in cold water on a burner, and SLOWLY increased the haet over the class period till it was boiling. the frog never noticed the temparature change, and was boiled to death. Maybe this is what happened to the starfish?

JavaJoe, that's horrible!!! You are not kidding that your teacher was sick! Wow!

You got a point. I thought these might be high scool or college student.
Teacher should be put in some water and then turn the heat on.

:D good idea!

I had to do the same experiment last year in my college bio class. Those frogs are all in line for a death in bio labs somewhere, and they are specifically cultured for that reason. We didn't kill the frog though, but im sure it ended up being disected somewhere else. Poor little buggers.
