Does anyone know if the pumps sold at Lowe's are considered safe for use in a closed loop set up?

They should be fine, provided they have fittings to allow pipes to be attached directly to the intake and output.
Fair warning though.. .the pumps at lowes aren't exactly great quality...

be careful i have heard that some ofthe pumps sold at Lowes and HD, have copper inside of them because are outdoor industrial pumops, not pumps for reef tanks.
look on the box of the pump it may have the info that you are looking for.

CLS removes the powerhead from the tank and places it externally (via external pump) and cycles the water for flow. It's called closed-loop because the system is sealed meaning no sump/refugium that would add a break in the plumbing. In a basic CLS you have the intake, plumbing, pump, plumbing and returns and that's all. (Of course you can add other equipment if you want such as canister filters, uv sterilizer, SCWD (wavemaker), etc. but not necessary). Customize to your specific needs.
Here's a picture of one:

Again, there's no one way to set up a CLS which makes it that much more fun to make yourself. Experiment a little. Hope this helps.

In a closed loop the water leaves the tank via a hose or pipe (often using holes in the tank) enters the pump and then returns to the tank (often using holes in the tank). The system is considered closed becuase the water flows directly into and out of the pump and never enters an open container. All water flow is through plumbing and the pump with no chance of overflowing, leaking, siphoning etc. because water has no where to go but back to the tank even if you turn the power off.

Yeah good point. I was thinking he was talking about the ones they sell for fish ponds and the like... but if he's referring to well pumps, etc... definitely possible.

Sorry about that. Didn't notice the advertisements. Won't happen again.
