yes, I use the plastic hose clamps. I've bought them from Drs and MD to use with a mag before and just bought some more to go with a rio hyperflow 8HF I'm setting up for my nano.

I tried the metal hose clamps and that wasnt a good idea. They rust out and then that goes in your water. I actually used zip ties. Tighten as much as I could and never had a problem but now I run straight PVC

I don't have any clamps on the inside, BUT I have used the zip ties for many water pressure related projects, and they have held just fine.

I have zip ties on it tight as I can get them and it has come off twice this week I will maybe see if I can find a beefier hose barb

It should be nearly impossible to pull a hose off a barb fitting even without any clamps. Pump pressure should certainly not be able to do it.
If you are continuing to have the issue, it sounds like either your barb fitting is not properly matched to the tubing size, or the tubing has aged and "flared out" over the barb, coming loose over time. If it's the latter, just cut about 2" off the end of the hose and reinstall. That may fix it.

For anything out of water you can use a normal hose clamp. However for anything in the water if you need to use one use a food grade Stainless Steel hose clamp. They do make such a thing. I pulled food grade tankers and we used them to mate our hose connections when we had to repair our hoses. You would be amazed at the regs the USDA puts on Food Safety sometimes. Or do what I did raise the out put on the mag 12 with a adapter to a slip fitting the go to a barbed one out of the water then use a hose clamp. Not having any issues.
