Roggy, mind if I hitchhike on your post?
If a tank that was exposed to ick has had all the rocks, live sand, crabs, snails, etc., removed but has not finished the 4 week "ick cleanup" does the ick stay active in the water?
The reason I am asking is that I am moving all the live rock etc., from a 20 G into a 55 G. I will let that 55 run it's 4 week course because there was an ick exposed fish in the 20 G. The 20 G will then be made into a QT as per the posted instructions.
I am wondering if I can just re-use the water that is currently in there for the QT tank. (transfer to containers, clean the tank, then put it back)
I am trying to see is there is a way to get a jump start on the 3-4 quarantine of some clown fish that will be put into the big tank. They would finish their QT period about the same time that the big tank is free of ick.
Thanks,
Chris

I'm pretty sure that ick is on everything if the tank has been thouroughly contamineated. Part of its life cycle involves hatching on the substrate and rocks and another is the free swimming stage so it would be everywhere. I'm sure Beth or Terry B can confirm or correct me.

If you were trying to jump start a cycle and then were planning on running hyposalinity as a treatment in your QT, then using the water is okay. Otherwise you run the risk of infecting your fish. I would probably not do it.

Thanks for the responses.
I think it may be best to just start with a fresh 20 gallon mix. I had just done a 10 gallon change and thought I may be saving a few bucks by saving the water.
I will go ahead and cycle from the beginning and wait on adding the clowns.
Thanks again,
Chris
