does light contribute to diatom growth?

i have a diatom problem mainly because i use tap water since i don't have access to ro/di water atm but working on it. and it was going away just fine until yesterday. come back home from work and woke up today i see a LOT of growth between that time lapse. idk how long the lights been on but i just got a light system for this tank like 2 days ago.

In my experience yes it does. Diatom problems are most prolific and quite natural in a newly set up system. Most of the time it will eventually go away but you may continue to have trouble with it and undesirable algae as long as you use tap.

Most diatoms are photosynthetic, so light will stimulate them to grow and reproduce.
