does LR that replaces bio balls need light to be effective ?

yeah just like bioballs it will take them a while to be biologically active if you use dead rock but it will grow bacteria in time.

unfortunately the LR in the sump starts to degrade over time and you will quickly get a sediment layer under the rocks. if you ever have to move anything around, it will all get kicked up and muck up your whole system. this is why the advice given to you is correct, but i would just personally but the rock in your display, it will make it look better and keep your sump as clean as possible.

here's another , realated question - will the addt'l LR in the sump , instead of bio-balls, allow me to increase livestock and bio-load in the DT ?
