does running t-8 NO on VHO ballast hurt the ballast?

i have 4 48" t-8's with an external ballast and was wondering if i could just swap the ballast with a VHO and as the bulbs need replacing i would replace them with VHO? i really don't have the money to do it all at once
also, can i use my NO endcaps or are the vho ones different?(other than the size)

The IceCap has the "smarts" to only send the power required to light the bulb. I'm not sure about any other ballasts.
