At night...when the lights are out for an hour or so...in a small cave in my tank i shine my flashlight in and every night i see what looks like some sorta worm sticking out of a piece of rock...I dont know what it is...its just long and brown colored, sorta picking at the liverock behind the piece he is in...i dont know how long it is because it has never been fully out of the rock...ive seen in sticking out of two different holes in the rock so im assuming there is some sorta cavern in the rock where it lives....it has the same sorta look of a tenticle from a condylastic anemone..a dark color though...and it quickly retracts into the rock when the light is pointed in the cave...
I will never be able to get a pic, the lights are off then, it would be useless to try
anyone have a guess at what it could be?

I think that I have the same thing in my tank. It hides out in a piece of gulf LR and when I shine the flashlight at night I see him moving sand around, then he retracts right back into his hole. I think it is some type of bristle worm....looks like a milipede.

I have the same things and I looked under peanut worms (PNUT worms, as stated below) and thats not it. Have not found anything yet, despite looking on the net, but I definately have the same thing. Dont seem to bother anything as of yet, its been about 3 months. ;)

A little off topic -- but a good tip for this kind of thing. I take my camera into the next room (which is lit) and focus on something that is about the same distance as the object in the tank I want to photograph. Lock in the autofocus...and bring the camera back in and shoot the tank with the flash. You'll be amazed that you can get photos of these night guys since the range is set in advance. I finally got to see my purple reef lobster this way!

I just saw another post on the fish discussion board that fits what I think I have (picture included) and what you may have. I'm going to do some research now, but wanted to let you know.
Its under: Another "Help ID this thing" by Ryeomans. HTH ;)

Thanks for the heads up but nope, Mine is not a spaghetti worm...ive only seen ONE single tenticle, around 1/4" in diameter or less.....all browny looking, maybe a lighter coloration on the tip.

the peanut worms that you see in pics are the whoel entire worm exposed. in a tank the only part of the worm that you can see is the long tubular/tentacle looking thing that searches for food. i still think this is what you have!
good luck
